The district's 2026 posted order bans surf-riding only where it is marked by signs or flags. Check for flags and signs before you paddle out, and ask a lifeguard if a tower is staffed. See the beach.

Ocean Safety

State Parks warns that people drown every year because they underestimate the power of ocean water. Learn to swim before you go, never swim alone, and do not turn your back to the ocean. Lifeguard towers are often staffed in summer, staffed less in spring and fall and not staffed in winter; mobile lifeguards also patrol. Ask about conditions before you go in.

Surf Conditions

This site does not publish live surf reports. Ask the lifeguards or the kiosk at (760) 438-3143 for that day's conditions and any flagged zones.

Lessons and Rentals

The Camp Store near the campground entrance runs a beach rental program. For lessons, State Parks lists a surf-lesson concession at Carlsbad State Beach, the separate state beach in town. See nearby beaches.

Snorkeling and Diving

Skin diving and scuba diving are also listed activities here. Diving is banned inside the Batiquitos Lagoon protected area. See fishing and diving.
