Plan Your Visit
To plan a visit to South Carlsbad State Beach, decide first whether you are coming for the day or camping. Day visitors pay $10 a vehicle ($20 at peak rates) and park at South Ponto, open 7 a.m. to sunset. Campers book on ReserveCalifornia up to six months ahead and check in at 2 p.m. Either way, no dogs on the beach and no wood fires on the sand.
Trip Planner at a Glance
Coming for the Day
- Drive to the South Ponto or North Ponto lot on Carlsbad Boulevard south of the campground. Vehicles over 25 feet long or 9 feet wide are not allowed.
- Pay the day-use fee: $10, or $20 at the special holiday, seasonal and weekend rate.
- Walk down to the beach from South Ponto, the best route. Restrooms and a rinse shower are by the lot.
- Be out of South Ponto by sunset (North Ponto by 10 p.m.).
See Ponto Beach and hours and fees.
Coming to Camp
- Book on ReserveCalifornia, as early as six months out.
- Pick ocean or inland, and hookup or not, using the campground map.
- Drive in from I-5 at Poinsettia Lane, north on Carlsbad Boulevard, U-turn at Breakwater Road, then south to the entrance. See directions.
- Check in at the kiosk at 2 p.m. or later with your confirmation and photo ID.
- Read the welcome board for that week's programs.
What to Bring
- Sun protection and drinking water; State Parks notes the oceanfront sites have no shade.
- Shoes that handle cobblestones.
- A propane or butane fire pit if you want a beach fire (wood fires are not allowed on the sand).
- Money for shower tokens if you are camping (token machines are at the ranger station and campfire center).
- Firewood can be bought at the Camp Store; State Parks asks visitors not to move firewood.
Things That Catch People Out
- Dogs are not allowed on the beach. They can stay in the campground on a 6-foot leash. See dogs.
- Alcohol and glass are allowed only in your campsite.
- The entrance can't be reached straight from Poinsettia Lane; coming that way, you need the U-turn at Breakwater Road.
- Drones are not allowed.
- Theft is the most common crime along the coastal beaches, mostly from unattended campsites; lock up bikes, coolers and boards.
- No Wi-Fi in the campground.
Seasons
State Parks lists no seasonal closure, and the campground has winter stay limits, so it runs all year. Lifeguard towers are often staffed in summer, lightly in spring and fall and not in winter. The campground is very popular, especially in summer. From March 1 to May 1 a juvenile curfew (8 p.m. to 6 a.m.) applies.
Nearby
Batiquitos Lagoon has a CDFW trail reached from Gabbiano Lane. Carlsbad State Beach, in town at Tamarack Avenue, is the other state beach in Carlsbad.
