What the Park Is

California State Parks describes South Carlsbad as a San Diego Coast park with a popular bluff-top campground and stairs leading to the beach for swimming, surfing, skin diving, fishing and picnicking. The campground fills the long strip between Carlsbad Boulevard and the bluff edge. A park road runs down the middle: oceanfront sites sit on the bluff side, inland sites on the other. Ocean sites look straight out over the water but have no shade.

The Beach Below the Bluff

State Parks' San Diego Coast brochure calls this a narrow beach that has long been known as "cobble beach." Sand covers the natural seawall of cobblestones for long stretches of time, then storms and currents strip it back. The brochure also names the dredging of Agua Hedionda Lagoon, to the north, as one of the things that changes the beach. Expect sand one visit and rounded stones the next. See the beach for swimming and lifeguards.

South Ponto and North Ponto

South of the campground the park has two day-use lots, South Ponto and North Ponto. South Ponto has restrooms, an outdoor rinse shower and the easiest route to the sand. These lots are where most people who come only for the day park. See Ponto Beach.

South Carlsbad Is Not Carlsbad State Beach

California State Parks runs two separate units in Carlsbad. Carlsbad State Beach is the beach in town, reached from Tamarack Avenue, with its own page and phone line. South Carlsbad State Beach is this one: the campground and the Ponto beaches farther south on Carlsbad Boulevard. The two are easy to confuse. See nearby Carlsbad beaches.

Batiquitos Lagoon Next Door

Batiquitos Lagoon lies next to the park. The lagoon waters east of the Interstate 5 bridge are a no-take marine protected area, and the lagoon shore is a California Department of Fish and Wildlife ecological reserve with its own trail. See Batiquitos Lagoon.
