Accessibility
The most accessible way onto South Carlsbad State Beach is from the South Ponto Day Use Area, where California State Parks says the route to the beach is accessible and a free beach wheelchair is kept in a self-service cabinet. The campground has 13 accessible paved sites, and every restroom and shower building has accessible facilities.
Access at a Glance
Beach Wheelchair
The park has one beach wheelchair, free to use, first come, first served. It is stored in a self-service cabinet at the South Ponto lot. To use it, stop at the campground entrance kiosk with a photo ID, fill out the release of liability form, and get the combination code; or call (760) 438-3143 for details.
Getting to the Sand
- South Ponto: the route to the beach is accessible, with ample accessible parking, an accessible restroom and an outdoor rinse shower. State Parks calls this the best access.
- North Ponto: accessible parking and an accessible vault toilet, but State Parks still points to South Ponto for the beach.
- Campground: four sets of stairways lead down. The ramp between campsites 179 and 180 is no longer recommended as an accessible route; erosion has narrowed it near the bottom and it may be closed.

Accessible Campsites
State Parks lists 10 standard accessible sites (16, 77, 87, 97, 108, 119, 126, 148, 153 and 184) and 3 accessible hookup sites (134, 216 and 219), spread between the north and south ends. All are paved, level and roomy, with accessible tables and fire rings. Paved tent pads do not take stakes.
To book one, say so when you reserve. You will need a valid DMV disabled person placard or plate, a disabled veteran plate, or a State Parks Disabled Discount Pass; the disabled person must stay at the site for the whole visit. A placard alone does not give a discount: for that you need a State Parks Disabled Discount Pass or Distinguished Veteran Pass, and the pass holder must be the first camper to check in. See reservations.
Restrooms, Showers and Parking
Every combination restroom and shower building in the campground has accessible restrooms and showers and one accessible parking stall. Those ADA stalls are for restroom and shower use only; registered vehicles must park inside their campsite.
Camp Store and Campfire Center
The Camp Store has accessible parking on the north side of the building, and its route is generally accessible. The campfire center next to it has accessible seating and an accessible parking stall.
