Nearby Carlsbad Beaches
Carlsbad has two separate California State Parks beaches. Carlsbad State Beach is the beach in town, reached from Tamarack Avenue off Interstate 5, and is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. South Carlsbad State Beach, about 3 miles south on Carlsbad Boulevard, is the bluff-top campground with the South and North Ponto day-use areas. Both are run by the San Diego Coast District.
Two State Beaches at a Glance
Carlsbad State Beach (Tamarack)
State Parks describes Carlsbad State Beach as a beach on the San Diego Coast for swimming, surfing, scuba diving, fishing and beachcombing. It sits on Carlsbad Boulevard (Highway S21) at Tamarack, and its brochure gives Tamarack Avenue off I-5 as the way in. Its listed hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and its phone is (760) 720-7001. It has no campsites to reserve: State Parks' San Diego Coast brochure names South Carlsbad and San Elijo as the north county state beach campgrounds.
Current restriction (checked October 2026): State Parks says the Tamarack day-use parking lot is closed to vehicles after summer swells and high tides eroded large parts of the beach and the lot. The area stays open to people on foot and bike, and State Parks does not know when the lot will reopen. Check the Carlsbad State Beach page before you go.
State Parks lists a surf-lesson concession at Carlsbad State Beach, and the Carlsbad State Junior Lifeguards are based at 2680 Carlsbad Blvd.
South Carlsbad State Beach
This site's park: a bluff-top campground with stairs to a narrow cobble-and-sand beach, plus the Ponto day-use lots at the south end. Day use is $10, or $20 at peak rates. See about the beach and camping.
Which One Should You Pick?

Batiquitos Lagoon
Next to South Carlsbad, the CDFW Batiquitos Lagoon Ecological Reserve has a hiking trail reached from Gabbiano Lane. See Batiquitos Lagoon.
